A few words of personal reflection on a week of fire and ash. Many of you know I’m holding space for a group of people taking a 1-month sacred pause from social media. There are 18 of us in the group. I will have more to say on this later. ♡ but for now, just how this has related to and impacted my experience this week. I haven’t been on social media and I spend about 2 minutes a day checking the news. So, the information I’m receiving is through direct connection with friends. I’m in a whatsapp group called EASTSIDE SAFETY where folks have been sharing relevant info + resources. There are 3 people who have been my touchpoints through this experience. Each of them are more plugged in than I am, and I am indeed able to reap the benefits of this. Does this mean I’m living in a vacuum? Does this mean I’m missing a lot of what’s happening? Yes. I’ve been thinking a lot about this. Not a cell in my being has wanted to be on social media in this time. Not me, Not now. My ability to meet this moment is not improved by being inundated by fast paced updates and horrific imagery. I asked myself: Am I being avoidant? Am I not showing up? Well, depending on your perspective, I’m sure we might be able to agree to disagree. I have been thinking a lot about how natural it is, how right it is, for us to play different roles in our communities. I happen to have friends who are more inclined to be more plugged in to what’s happening. These are roles they are choosing. I ask myself: What is my role? As a dynamic human who likes to wear different hats, I may be your social media informant in February. But for now, as I connect with my LA community and hear what is present for people, there is a lot of stress, anxiety, exhaustion, sadness, fear and all our other favorites… I believe that I can best serve by focusing on my own regulation so that I can show up as a stable, grounded and spacious presence for those who are in deep need of healing touch and compassionate space. I am offering 40 free 1-hour sessions to folks who have lost their homes in the fires / the firefighters. I’m starting with my immediate community (that means you), so if you or someone you know has lost their home in the fires or are a firefighter, please send them the following image and encourage them to reach out.
