So today I am celebrating the resource sharing that emerges from community. Community isn’t just about hanging out, dinner parties, picnics. No — it’s about care, mutuality, and doing this together. On another note: Are you a member of your local “Buy Nothing” group on facebook? I have a facebook account with 0 friends that I use to be a part of a few groups on there — and the Buy Nothing group is my neighborhood bestie. In fact — I’m literally a “Top Contributor” in there cuz I’ve given away 100s of items through the years. Basically it’s a place to post when you are gifting something, in search of something (to keep or borrow). You are only allowed to be in one group, the one for the hood you live in, which makes a dramatic difference in keeping things running smoothly — if the person who wants something lives only 5 min away, they’re way more likely to actually come pick up the thing. I’ve successfully given away "open bag of granola”, “one grapefruit”, “large piece of plastic”, “single broken coaster, needs to be glued”, ETC ETC ETC. Someone says they want it, I DM them the address and where I put it, and generally they pick it up the same day or the next day. Only a handful of times (out of hundreds) has the person ghosted. AMAZING! (Note: Drop-offs at places like Salvation Army are cool and all, but a lot of it gets thrown out - so Buy Nothing groups let your random ass items find their way to loving hands!)
