what is “a day out of time”?
A Day Out Of Time (ADOOT) is a name I made up for a one day digital detox during which you not only abstain from all screens, but you take a break from “time”, by covering all the clocks. The night before your DOOT, you cover all the clocks in your house and car, and put all your tech away out of sight. You wake up in the morning, and spend a full day in a natural uninterrupted flow. The following morning you uncover clocks and retrieve devices.
***may or may not bring psychedelic journey references in , but : -this is a potent “macrodose” digital detox vs “microdosing” (maintaining healthy habits in a sustained way) …. there is so much mirroring between ADOOT and journeywork! someoen might have a totally blissful spacious creative beautiful day, another person might really face and be with their anxieties, challenging emotions, etc….. and there’s room in a day to experience a lot.
-connect w where the sun is in the sky, be present with the quality of daylight
-be more present and connected to body and breath
-There are a million ways you could spend your time
why would i want to do that?
So many of us spend hours a day staring at our screens. We migth not even realize the impact that the tech use has on our minds and bodies until we take a break.
anxiety, depression..
gain awareness of our attachment to tech.
how might i spend my time?
yadda yadda my number one suggestion is to take away all the shoulds. go with the flow. blah blah blah. and if structure is more supportive to you than spaciousness you can design a flow of activities that will nourish, inspire, sooth, calm, ecxite you. here is a long list of great ideas
what are some things i need to consider?
intentions for the experience. what is soul needing?
what do i need to do to prepare?
If you are worried about being out of touch for emergencies, tell your few people who you really want to be able to reach you the phone number of a neighbor or friend who lives nearby-ish. chances are there won’t be an emergency that you can always solve for one day. i have some other tips around sneaky iPhone things to still be able to receive calls from a special few only.
-if you want to drive somewhere (like a hike) write down directions
-if you DONT want to drive somewhere, go grocery shopping in advance so have ingredients to cook
-recipe? write it down
i’d like to really treat this as a meaningful experience with myself.
oooh this makes my heart sing! every time i do A Day Out Of Time it’s unique and special and feels like a gift I’m giving myself. I wish you the same!
the idea of this gives me anxiety. i want to do it but i honestly think it’s going to be hard for me.
I really get it. I commend you for acknowleging how deep this experience can be! i’d love to support you and offer an enthusiastic, loving and supportive ear to help you prepare for, design, and integrate / explore the insights you receive from your day away. please text or email me and i’ll give you more info / set up time to be together in person or over zoom/phone before and after your special day.
Hi! I’m Mari Mu
Ten years ago, I had a wakeup call about how much of my life I was spending staring at screens. I wondered “how would my life be different if I spent less time on my devices?”
Soon thereafer, I did my first digital detox. I swapped my smartphone for a flip phone and entirely abstained from the internet for one month.
I did my first digital detox. I swapped my smartphone for a flip phone and entirely abstained from the internet for one month. I did the same thing 3 years ago.
There is A LOT I can say about these experiences…but to put it simply, I was undeniably happier and more peaceful on the other side.
These experiences are a touchstone for me. - something that can help me remember what it feels like to be free of the addictive cycles of tech use. A deeper felt sense of being present.
Now I, like you, can no longer take such drastic steps away from tech, yet I long for that full immersive retreat feeling.
So, in 2023, I began doing a practice that I call A DAY OUT OF TIME.
For just one day, I abstain from all tech use AND cover all the clocks in my house and car.
As someone who has played a lot with my digital habits through the years, I cannot emphasize enough the potency of covering the clocks! I honestly had no idea that my awareness of the time alone had such an impact on how I experience life.
